Tulane inventors have created FlyFast!, a device engineered to automate the transfer of Drosophila flies between culturing vials.

The Problem

Drosophila flies are widely used in genetic research laboratories around the world as model organisms for studying fundamental biological processes and disease mechanisms due to their short life cycle and genetic similarity to humans. Currently, researchers must manually transfer these flies between cultivation vials—a tedious, time-consuming process that diverts valuable research time to repetitive tasks. The labor-intensive nature of maintaining fly cultures creates significant bottlenecks in research laboratories, resulting in higher personnel costs and potentially forcing researchers to discard valuable genetic lines due to resource constraints.

The Solution

This device significantly reduces time required to transfer flies to new vials as compared to manual transfers, revolutionizing a traditionally labor-intensive process in genetic research laboratories. Capable of transferring 20 vials simultaneously, FlyFast! not only enhances efficiency but also conserves resources by reducing the expenditures on salaries for personnel who would otherwise perform this repetitive task. Additionally, it enables researchers to maintain a broader array of fly lines that might otherwise be discarded.
